Cajamarca is known as the place where the Inca empire finally fell to the Spaniards. The last Inca Atahualpa was captured here after a brief battle. He offered to buy his freedom by filling a room to a height of an arms length above his head, once with gold and twice with silver. It was agreed, he also had to covert to Catholicism. He did, he filled the room and was killed anyway. Thus ended the Inca Empire.
